Bears Schedule

The Chicago Bears are one of the most storied franchises in the history of the National Football League. Along with the now Arizona Cardinals, the Bears have the distinction of being one of the only two remaining teams from the NFL’s inception. Before looking forward to the upcoming Bears schedule, let’s take a look back at the franchise’s legendary past.

Bears Schedule: Past and Present

The Bears were originally known as the Decatur Staleys when they were founded in 1919 in Decatur, Illinois. They later moved to Chicago in 1921, became the Bears in 1922 and played home games at Wrigley Field. The Bears moved to their current home, Soldier Field, in 1971.

The “Monsters of the Midway” have captured nine NFL championships, including their blowout win over the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XX. The Super Bowl team was guided by head coach Mike Ditka, who replaced the legendary George Halas in 1982.

The Bears have notched more regular season and overall wins than any other club in NFL history. Chicago captured its 700th win in November 2010. Chicago has also clashed with the bitter rival Green Bay Packers an astounding 185 times entering the 2013 season. Through 2012, the Bears have beaten the Packers 92 times.

Some of the greatest players to ever suit up in the NFL have done so for the Bears. The franchise currently holds the all-time record with 27 players in the Hall of Fame. Some of the notable names in Canton include Halas and Ditka, George Blanda, Dick Butkus, Sid Luckman, Bronko Nagurski, Richard Dent, Mike Singletary, Gale Sayers and Walter Payton.

The current incarnation of the Bears is led by quarterback Jay Cutler and standout wide receiver Brandon Marshall. The 2014 campaign marks the 95th season in franchise history.

49ers Schedule

Some of the greatest players in NFL history have suited up for the San Francisco 49ers. Hall of Famers Joe Montana, Steve Young and Jerry Rice are just a few of the names that are part of the franchise’s impressive history. Before taking a look at the upcoming 49ers schedule, it’s never a bad time to take a look back at the past.

49ers Schedule: Past and Present

The 49ers broke into the National Football League after the All-America Football Conference merged with the NFL in 1949. The team’s moniker derives from the gold prospectors who were in Northern California in the 1800s. The 49ers have the distinction of being the oldest professional team in the state of California.

The direction of the franchise changed forever upon the arrival of head coach Bill Walsh and quarterback Joe Montana in the late 1970’s. The 1980’s were dominated by Walsh, Montana and the red and gold; as the Niners would go on to capture Super Bowl titles for the 1981, 1984, 1988 and 1989 seasons. After Montana’s departure, Steve Young would go on to lead San Francisco to a blowout victory over the San Diego Chargers in Super Bowl XXIX during the 1994 season.

Walsh, Montana, Young and Jerry Rice are just a few of the players enshrined in the Hall of Fame who suited up for San Francisco. Other notable names include Y.A. Tittle, Joe Perry, Jimmy Johnson, Dave Wilcox, Fred Dean, Ronnie Lott and Deion Sanders.

The current incarnation of the Niners is led by head coach Jim Harbaugh and young star quarterback Colin Kaepernick. The Nevada product Kaepernick replaced incumbent quarterback Alex Smith during the 2012 season and led San Francisco to the NFC Championship. Despite staging a furious second-half rally, the Niners suffered a 34-31 loss to the Baltimore Ravens in Super Bowl XLVII.

The 49ers enter the 2014 season with five Super Bowl titles, six NFC titles, 19 division championships and 26 playoff appearances. The Niners will leave the legendary Candlestick Park to move into Levi’s Stadium for the 2014 season.

No team has raised the most recognized trophy in all of sports during the Stanley Cup era more than the Montreal Canadiens. The “Habs” have appeared in the Stanley Cup Final 34 times and come out with the title 24 times. Montreal won the cup for the first time in 1916. The Toronto Maple Leafs are second on the all-time list with 13 titles. The Detroit Red Wings are third with 11 championships. The Wings have also lost in the Final a record 13 times.

The 2013 NHL Playoffs nearly didn’t happen at all due to the NHL lockout. The labor dispute between the league and the players began when the collective bargaining agreement expired on September 15th, 2012. The lockout lasted all the way until January 2013. The lockout forced the cancellation of over 500 regular season games. Each team’s schedule was also reduced from 82 to 48 games.

The 2013 season began with a bang as the Chicago Blackhawks opened the year with at least a point in their first 30 games. The defending champion entering the 2013 NHL playoffs is the Los Angeles Kings, who dispatched of the New Jersey Devils in six games to win the cup for the first time in franchise history in 2012.

2013 NBA Playoffs

Sixteen teams will enter the postseason, but only one will have the right to hoist the Larry O’Brien Trophy. The 2013 NBA Playoffs will get underway on Saturday, April 20th. The last possible date for Game Seven of the 2013 NBA Finals would be Thursday, June 20th. You can follow the action with an NBA playoff bracket. These brackets are perfect for those looking to set up an office pool, or for fans who want to who their team could wind up playing in the next round and beyond.

2013 NBA Playoffs: History

The NBA expanded the playoff field to the current 16-team field in 1984. From 1977-84, the top two seeds in each conference earned a first-round bye. Under the new format, byes were eliminated and all teams played in the opening round.

In ’84, the first round was a best-of-five series. The NBA later changed this to a best-of-seven series in 2003, meaning all rounds of the playoffs are now seven-game sets. Each team would have to win three playoff series before earning the right to advance to the best-of-seven NBA Finals. In the championship series, the team with the best record will host the first two games before the set shifts for the next three games. If Games 6 and 7 are necessary, they would be played back at the home of the higher seeded team.

Entering the 2013 NBA Playoffs, no team has more championships than the Boston Celtics. The C’s have captured 17 titles during their storied history. While their last title came in 2008, their last of four losses in the Finals came in 2010. That loss was to the Los Angeles Lakers, who have captured the NBA’s ultimate prize 16 times. The Lakers, who won five of their championships while playing in Minneapolis, have also lost in the Finals 15 times.

Third on the all-time list in the Chicago Bulls. Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen and head coach Phil Jackson led the Bulls to six titles during the 1990s. Jackson has won 11 championships as coach of the Bulls and Lakers. Legendary Celtics head coach Red Auerbach won nine championships.

LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and the Miami Heat enter the 2013 NBA Playoffs looking to defend their title. James and the Heat beat Kevin Durant and the Oklahoma City Thunder in 2012. With the series win, James and the Heat avenged losing to the Dallas Mavericks in the 2011 Finals.

NFL Survivor Pool

Whether it’s fantasy football, straight up pick em contests or against the spread pools, the NFL lends itself to so many fun and exciting pools, leagues and contests. One contest that has surged in popularity in recent years is an NFL survivor pool. Also known as a suicide pool, survival pool, confidence pool or knockout pool, the survivor pool seems like it would be one of the easier football contests to participate in. However, many find out the hard way it can be the most difficult.

How to Play in an NFL Survivor Pool

While the objective of a survivor pool is fairly simple, executing a winning strategy can be exceptionally difficult. Each week during the regular season, a participant in a survivor pool will select only one of the 32 NFL teams they believe has the best chance to win. The caveat is that once you have selected a team and locked it in for a week, you cannot use that team for the remainder for the season.

For example, let’s say you select the Seattle Seahawks to win their Week One matchup against the Arizona Cardinals. If the Seahawks win, you advance to pick in Week Two. However, you cannot choose the Seahawks in any week for the rest of the year.screenshot of the NFL Survivor Pool

Using the same example, if you chose the Seahawks and they lost, you are automatically eliminated from the survivor pool. Just one incorrect pick will kick you out of the tournament for the remainder of the year.

As the weeks of the season roll on, it’s likely the pool field will dwindle with incorrect picks. The person to have the final remaining correct selection, no matter the week, is declared the winner of the pool. This could happen in Week 1, Week 6 or any other week of the year. It’s all based on how well the pool players make their picks.

There are several different strategies you can employ when competing in the pool. Some like to burn through all the elite teams early and roll the dice later, while others will look for potentially good matchups on paper and roll the dice early so they have more elite teams at their disposal later in the year.

Either way, a survivor pool is just another way to add a little more excitement to an NFL weekend.

MLB Picks Pool

First-pitch of the 2013 MLB season is almost here. As hope springs eternal in Major League cities across the United States, fans and prognosticators are busy making their future MLB picks. To gear up for the season, Printable Brackets has created a 2013 MLB Baseball pool that is fun for any fan.

The pool spans the duration of the season and includes every game on the schedule.

MLB Picks: The 2013 Season

For the second time in three seasons, the San Francisco Giants head into the 2013 MLB season the defending World Series champions. After falling behind two-games-to-none in the NLDS against the Cincinnati Reds, the Giants went on a historical tear that was culminated by a four-game sweep of the Detroit Tigers in the Fall Classic. The Giants earned their seventh World Series title in franchise history.

The 2013 season will feature a number of changes. First and foremost, the Houston Astros are moving from the National League Central to the American League West. The move means all six divisions now have five teams apiece. The Astros will be featured on Opening Night as they will face the in-state rival Texas Rangers on Sunday, March 31st.make your mlb picks for the entire season

Because of Houston’s move, Interleague games will now take place throughout the season for the first time. Each team will play a total of 20 Interleague games. The other 142 will be played within the respective league. The 84th edition of the All-Star Game will take place at Citi Field in New York on July 16th.

MLB Picks Pool

The MLB Baseball Picks pool is a fun and easy way to follow your favorite teams throughout the season. The 30 MLB teams are broken up into eight groups. To participate in the pool, simply pick one team from each group that you want to be represented by for the entire season.

For example, Group 2 consists of:

  • Los Angeles Dodgers
  • Los Angeles Angels
  • Philadelphia Phillies
  • Toronto Blue Jays

Select one team from that group and that will be your club for the rest for the season. Each victory is worth one point. The player with the most points at the end of the World Series is the winner. For an added bonus, you can take select weeks during the season and make each victory worth two points. You could also increase the value for playoff victories. The MLB Baseball picks pool will not only help you keep tabs on your favorite teams, but it will allow you to track your bitter rivals as well.

Sweet 16 Bracket

The Sweet 16 bracket is reserved for the teams who survive the opening rounds of the NCAA basketball tournament. The schools that advance to the round of 16 are nearly as fortunate as the fans and pool participants who get out of the first weekend of the tournament without their bracket being completely busted.

By the end of the opening rounds, thousands of fans have launched their March Madness sheets into a trash bin. However, a Sweet 16 sheet allows those unlucky people the opportunity to start fresh and begin a completely new office tournament. The Sweet 16 sheet runs all the way through the national championship and gives everyone a shot a redemption.

History of the Sweet 16 Bracket

The field for the NCAA men’s basketball tournament currently consists of 68 teams, but the inaugural tournament in 1939 only included eight. The “Big Dance” expanded to 16 teams in 1951 and expanded several more times before adopting its current format in 2011.

In 2012, the eventual national champion Kentucky Wildcats appeared in the Sweet 16 for the 43rd time in history. Since the tournament expanded to 64 teams in 1985, the eight-time national champion Wildcats have been to the round of 16 a total of 17 times.

The five-time national champion North Carolina Tar Heels have been to the Sweet 16 32 times, including 19 trips since 1985. Entering the 2013 NCAA Tournament, the rival Duke Blue Devils have been to the Sweet 16 a whopping 20 times since ’85. In fact, Duke has made it to the round of 16 a total of 12 times since 1998. The Michigan State Spartans have taken 10 trips to the Sweet 16 since ’98.

Sweet 16 Venues in 2013

The locations and venues for the Sweet 16 and Regional Finals in 2013 are:

  • East Regional – Verizon Center – Washington, DC
  • West Regional – Staples Center – Los Angeles, California

Pac 12 Basketball Tournament

The 2014 Pac 12 Basketball Tournament will get underway on Wednesday, March 12th. For the second time in Pac 12 basketball history, the tournament will take place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. The championship game will be held on March 15th.

Under the current format, all 12 teams in the conference will participate in the tournament. The top four teams in the standings at the end of the regular season will get a bye into the quarterfinals. The winner of this year’s event will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA basketball tournament.

History of the Pac 12 Basketball Tournament

The first tournament was held in 1987 when the conference was still known as the Pac 10. That year, Tournament Most Valuable Player Reggie Miller led the UCLA Bruins to a 76-64 victory over the Washington Huskies. The tournament only stuck around for a total of four years before it was dropped after the 1990 season.

The event was resurrected in 2002 and moved to the Staples Center in Los Angeles. The University of Arizona won both the last event in 1990 and the revived version in 2002. In fact, Arizona won the tournament four straight times in 1989, ’90, ’02 and ’03. The Wildcats have also lost in the championship game three times. Arizona has an impressive 22-12 all-time record in the tournament. Arizona State enters the 2013 event a woeful 5-14 all-time.

UCLA, Oregon and Washington have each captured the tournament crown three times. In its first year as a member of the Pac 12, Colorado knocked off Arizona in overtime, 53-51, in 2012. The event marked the conference’s first Pac 12 championship.

Arizona’s Sean Elliott and Washington’s Isaiah Thomas are the only players to win tournament MVP honors in back-to-back years. Others to take home the trophy include future NBA players Jud Buechler, Luke Walton, Luke Ridnour, Josh childress, Darren Collison and DeMar DeRozan.

Fans and hoop lovers can follow the action with a printable Pac 12 basketball bracket.

World Cup 2020

World Cup 2020 will mark the 20th edition of the international football tournament.

World Cup: History

The first-ever World Cup was held in Uruguay in 1930. That year, the host nation knocked off Argentina, 4-2, in the inaugural final match. The United States finished in third place, while Yugoslavia came in fourth. The first tournament included 13 teams. The field was expanded to 16 in 1934, 24 in 1982 and eventually the current 32-team format in 1998.

No nation has had more overall success than Brazil, which has won the tournament an all-time high five times. Brazil has also finished second twice and third two more times. Brazil has finished inside the top four a total of 10 times. Brazil is also currently the only country that has played in every single World Cup.

Italy has the second-most overall titles with four, the last of which came in 2006. Italy and Brazil are the only nations to have ever won back-to-back titles. Germany sits alone in third place with three overall championships. In 2010, Spain blanked the Netherlands, 1-0, to capture its first title.

The United States has had very little success in World Cups past. The Americans’ best finish was the aforementioned third-place finish in 1930. In fact, that was also the only top-4 finish for the Americans in history.

A variety of awards are handed out for performance at the World Cup, including:

  • The Golden Ball – Best Player
  • The Golden Boot – Top Scorer
  • Golden Glove – Best Goalkeeper
  • Best Young Player Award
  • FIFA Fair Play Trophy
  • Most Entertaining Team
  • All-Star Team (announced since 1998)

More than 800 qualifying matches will take place before the start of the 2020 World Cup tournament.

UEFA Euro 2016

UEFA Euro 2016 will mark the 15th European Championship football tournament. Though the exact dates are still to be determined, Euro 2016 will take place in France during the summer of that year. There will be some format changes to the event, as the field will expand from 16 teams to 24 teams. A total of 52 teams will attempt to qualify for the tournament. France earns an automatic berth as the host site.

UEFA Euro 2016: Tournament History

The event was originally dubbed the “UEFA European Nations Cup” when it was created in 1960. The inaugural event was also held in France and 17 teams participated in a knockout format. Czechoslovakia, the Soviet Union, France and Yugoslavia advanced to the semifinals. The Soviet Union defeated Yugoslavia in extra time, 2-1, in the first-ever final match in Paris. England, West Germany and England were among the notable teams who refused to participate in the first tournament.UEFA Euro 2016

The event is held every four years and falls on the even-numbered year between the World Cup tournaments. Germany and Spain have come out on top an all-time high three times apiece. Germany’s last victory came in 1996, while Spain’s last championship came in the last event in 2012. Germany has also lost in the final match three times, while Spain has been runner-up on one occasion. Surprisingly, England has never finished better than third overall. That finish came in 1968 and England hasn’t advanced past the quarterfinals since 1996.

Michel Platini of France has scored the most goals in Euro Cup history with nine. Platini scored all nine of his goals in leading France to the championship in 1984. England’s Alan Shearer is second on the all-time list with seven goals. Portugal’s Cristiano Rondaldo is in a group of players who have racked up three goals.

Euro 2016 matches will take place in 10 different cities across France. The tournament winner will be eligible to participate in the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup. Due to fan violence during the UEFA Euro 2012, Russia will be forced to play three home games in the qualifying round without spectators.
