UEFA Champions League 2013

The UEFA Champions League 2013 tournament marks the 58th annual edition of the most prestigious football event in Europe. Few sporting events in the world are played or enjoyed with more passion or pride. As a result, the event’s popularity has exploded worldwide in recent years. In 2011, the Champions League Final bested the NFL’s Super Bowl as the most-watched sporting event in the world.

UEFA Champions League 2013: Overview and History

What is now known as the Champions League was originally called the European Champion Clubs’ Cup. The annual tournament was organized UEFA (Union of European Football Associations) in 1955. The event was colloquially called the European Cup until officially being changed to the Champions League in 1992.

Real Madrid won the first five tournaments and has won the event a record nine times overall. Real has also appeared in an all-time high 12 Champions League finals. A.C. Milan has come out on top in seven of its 11 championship final appearances. Liverpool sits alone in third with five championships.UEFA Champions League 2013

Chelsea captured the championship in 2012 after knocking off Bayern Munich in penalty kicks. More than 62,000 people were in attendance for the 2012 final. Chelsea didn’t fare so well in 2013, however, becoming the first defending champion to be eliminated in the group stage.

The knockout phase of the tournament gets underway with the “Round of 16” beginning February 12th. The draw for the quarterfinals will be held on March 15th. The first leg of the quarters will take place on April 2nd and 3rd, with the second leg following on April 9th and 10th. The first leg of the semifinals will take place on April 23rd and 24th, with the second leg coming on April 30th and May 1st.

The 2013 UEFA Champions League Final will be held at Wembley Stadium in London, England on Many 25th. Wembley was chosen in recognition of the 150th anniversary of the English Football Association. It will mark the seventh time Wembley Stadium will be the host site for the championship match. The winning club in 2013 will pocket over $16,000, 000. The loser in the final will receive just under $10,000,000.

Fantasy Baseball 2013

The 2013 MLB season will get underway Sunday, March 31st in Houston, Texas. As players begin gearing up for the new season in Spring Training, fantasy baseball 2013 drafts around the world are already taking place. There are plenty of old faces in new places in 2013. There are also some quirks to this year’s schedule that could alter your plans on draft day.

Fantasy Baseball 2013: Position Players

There is much debate across the baseball landscape as to which position player should be taken off the board in 2013 Fantasy Baseball drafts. Sabermetricians nearly unanimously agree that Los Angeles Angels outfielder Mike Trout should be the first offensive player selected. Trout burst on to the scene as a rookie in 2012, batting .326 with 30 home runs and 83 RBI. Trout, who will be turning only 22 during the 2013 campaign, also scored 129 runs and stolen 49 bases.

Trout figures to be at the top of a lineup that features newly-acquired outfielder Josh Hamilton, who is ranked in the top 15 of the vast majority of rankings. Angels first baseman Albert Pujols will also be looking to build off of his 30-homer, 105-RBI campaign.fantasy baseball 2013

The two other position players at the top of most ranking lists are Detroit Tigers third baseman Miguel Cabrera and Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Ryan Braun. Last year, Cabrera became the first player since 1967 to win Triple Crown honors after batting .330 with 44 homers and 139 RBI. Braun hit .319 with 41 homers and 112 RBI last season, but has once again been embroiled in performance-enhancing drug controversy during the offseason.

Fantasy Baseball 2013: Pitchers

When it comes to selecting a starting pitcher near the top of your 2013 Fantasy Baseball draft, the two candidates at the top of nearly every list are Justin Verlander of the Detroit Tigers and Clayton Kershaw of the Los Angeles Dodgers. Verlander went 17-8 with 239 strikeouts and a 2.64 ERA en route to leading the Tigers to the World Series last year. Kershaw was 14-9 with 229 strikeouts and a 2.53 ERA. Other starting pitchers at the top of the rankings include Seattle’s Felix Hernandez, Tampa Bay’s David Price and Washington’s Stephen Strasburg.

When it comes to relievers and closers, no one heads into the season more valued than Craig Kimbrel of the Atlanta Braves. Kimbrel struck out 116 batters and notched 42 saves in 2012. The 24-year-old Kimbrel has racked up 283 K’s and 89 saves in his first three big league season. Other projected top relievers in 2013 include Cincinnati’s Aroldis Chapman, Philadelphia’s Jonathan Papelbon and Jason Motte of the St. Louis Cardinals.

Fantasy Baseball 2013: News and Notes

There are some important things to keep in mind before making your first selection in your 2013 fantasy baseball draft.

Depending on when your draft is, you may be selecting players who are participating in the World Baseball Classic this year. The WBC runs from March 2nd-19th and will be over long before the season begins, but keeping an eye on those playing in the international tournament certainly is encouraged.

In addition, the schedule for every team has been altered this season to accommodate the Houston Astros’ move from the National League to the American League. Every team will now play a total of 20 Interleague games throughout the season.

Several high-profile players joined new teams and some switched leagues during the offseason. Some of the bigger names who will be wearing new uniforms this season include:

The United States is just behind the Dominican Republic in the eyes of the oddsmakers. Team USA has been nothing short of average in its two previous appearances in the WBC, posting a 7-and-7 record and never finishing better than fourth. The World Baseball Classic 2013 club will be managed by Joe Torre, who collected four World Series titles while skipper of the New York Yankees.

The USA pitching staff is headlined by reigning National League Cy Young Award winner R.A. Dickey, who was traded by the New York Mets to the Toronto Blue Jays during the offseason. NCAA Office Pool

For sports fans, there may be no better four-day stretch during the year than the opening weekend of March Madness. Millions of Americans participate in office pools during the NCAA men’s basketball tournament. For those in charge of running these pools, keeping track of all the participants and their scores can be extremely difficult. Now, an NCAA office pool worksheet is available to do the work for you.

NCAA Office Pool: Tracking the Action

The March Madness field is comprised of 68 teams and a total of 67 games will be played to crown a national champion. The second and third round of the tournament consists of 48 games over a four-day stretch, with 16 games apiece on Thursday and Friday, and eight games apiece on Saturday and Sunday.ncaa office pool

Documenting all the action can be a nightmare for those running a March Madness office pool, especially if there are a large number of participants. That’s why an NCAA office pool worksheet can substantially ease the burden placed on those responsible for tracking the action.

NCAA Office Pool: Using the Worksheet

The March Madness office pool worksheet is easy to use and understand. The first step is to determine how many points each victory in the respective rounds will be worth. Some will award only one point for each victory throughout the tournament, while others will use a weighted system that either rewards upsets or victories by teams that advance deep in the tournament.

Next, it’s time to put in the schools who will be playing against each other and when. This may initially appear to be a daunting task, but it will save so much time in the long run because results and point totals will automatically be calculated following the conclusion of games.

Finally, it’s time to put the players in the March Madness office pool and their picks in the worksheet. The worksheet will automatically keep track of their predictions, what percentage of their predictions are correct and how many cumulative points they have earned.

March Madness is a time for sports fans that is supposed to be enjoyed. With the office pool worksheet, you can enjoy all the action AND keep track of your March Madness pool at the same time.

3 on 3 Basketball Tournament

A 3 on 3 basketball tournament is one of the most popular recreational activities in the world today. It is estimated that over 250 million people participate in 3 on 3 basketball games worldwide. Instead of traditional 5 on 5 full-court games, 3 on 3 basketball tournament games are half-court contests. Most 3 on 3 basketball tournaments are held outside to keep with the “streetball” tradition.

3 on 3 Basketball Tournament: “Hoop it Up”

“Hoop it Up” bills itself as “The World’s Largest 3 on 3 Basketball Tour.” Basketball players off all ages typically compete outdoors on asphalt courts. The “Hoop it Up” tour rolls through dozens of cities in the United States, including Tampa, Dallas, Denver, Chicago, Boston, Atlanta, Phoenix and Washington, DC.3 on 3 basketball tournament

While it is a 3 on 3 tournament, teams can carry up to five players, two of which will be used as substitutes. Teams who win their respective divisions will qualify for the overall World Championships in New York. The team that wins the “Top Gun” division has the chance to take home $20,000.

Future of 3 on 3 Basketball Tournaments

There has been a movement in recent years to add a 3 on 3 basketball tournament to the Summer Olympics. The International Basketball Federation, otherwise known as FIBA, introduced a 3 on 3 basketball tournament at the Asian Indoor Games in 2007. Twenty boys teams and 20 girls teams participated in a 3 on 3 basketball tournament in the 2010 Summer Youth Olympics.

New Zealand won the first 3×3 Youth World Championship in 2011 in Italy. In August 2012, the first senior men’s and women’s 3×3 tournaments took place in Greece. FIBA Secretary General Patrick Baumann is hopeful that 3 on 3 basketball games could be included in the Summer Olympics in 2016 or 2020.

NIT Tournament

The National Invitational Tournament, otherwise known as the NIT Tournament, is a postseason college basketball event that began in the 1930s. The current version of the NIT involves 32 teams, with the final four advancing to play at Madison Square Garden in New York. The opening round of the NIT in 2013 will begin on Tuesday, March 19th. The championship game will take place on Thursday, April 4th.

History of the NIT Tournament

The postseason NIT began in 1938, which is a year before the NCAA men’s basketball tournament started. The inaugural NIT had only six teams and Temple beat Colorado in the first championship game. The NIT bracket has expanded from six to eight, to 12, to 14, to 16, to 24, to 32 and to 40 teams during its existence. Forty teams were involved from 2002-2006 before it went back to 32 teams, which is slightly less than half of the NCAA Tournament field.

The Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association was in control of the NIT until it was purchased by the NCAA in 2005. The NCAA bought the rights to the tournament for 10 years in an antitrust lawsuit settlement. The NCAA paid MIBA over $56-million for the rights to the NIT.

No school has run through the NIT bracket for the championship more than St. John’s. The New York-based school has won a record six championships and appeared in the NIT Tournament a record 16 times. The Bradley Braves have appeared in the NIT eight times and won four titles. Dayton and Michigan have won three NIT championships apiece.

Stigma of the NIT Tournament

For several reasons, the NIT is often viewed as far less important than the NCAA Tournament. One reason is because teams are sometimes reluctant to accept invitations to the NIT after being passed over for the NCAA Tournament. The NIT has also garnered such nicknames as the “Not Important Tournament” and “No Important Team.”

Preseason NIT Tournament

In addition to the postseason NIT, the preseason NIT has been in existence since 1985. The event was renamed the “NIT Season Tip-Off” after the NCAA bought the rights in 2005. Duke won the inaugural tournament in ’85. Others who have rolled through the NIT bracket include Syracuse, Arizona, Kansas, North Carolina, Butler, and most recently, Michigan.

It was the first of a conference-high 27 tournament championships for the Wildcats, who last captured the tournament crown in 2011.

There was a 25-year lull in the event, as the tournament was abandoned in favor of a round robin schedule from 1951-1978. The tournament did return in 1979, with Tennessee outlasting Kentucky in overtime.

Alabama has the second-most tournament championship victories with six, but its last title came in 1991. In 2012, Vanderbilt defeated Kentucky to win its second tournament title. The winner of the current SEC basketball tournament receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

When the SEC tournament resumed in ’79, the conference began handing out Most Valuable Player awards. Kentucky’s Kyle Macy took home the first honor. Women’s SEC Basketball Tournament

The women’s SEC Tournament was created in 1980. In that year, Tennessee took down Ole Miss, 85-71, in the inaugural championship game in Knoxville. The Volunteers have won 16 SEC Tournament titles, including three straight from 2010-12. Vanderbilt is second with six tournament titles.

ACC Basketball Tournament

The ACC basketball tournament is one of the longest-running postseason events in all of men’s hoops. The opening round of the 2013 ACC basketball tournament will begin on Wednesday, March 12th in Greensboro, North Carolina. The ACC tournament bracket championship game will be held on Sunday, March 17th, which is the same day the NCAA Tournament field will be announced.

History of the ACC Basketball Tournament

The first ACC tournament took place in 1954. North Carolina State needed overtime to outlast Wake Forest, 82-80, in Raleigh, North Carolina in the inaugural championship game. NC State went on to win the first three tournaments, with a win over Duke sandwiched between victories over Wake.

Unlike the majority of conferences, the winner of the ACC tournament bracket is declared the conference championship. There has not been a “regular season” ACC champion since the conference instituted the policy after the 1961 season.

Since joining the conference in 1953, Duke has racked up a record 19 ACC basketball championships. The Blue Devils have won nine championships since 2000 alone. The rival North Carolina Tar Heels are right behind Duke with 17 titles. NC State has won 10. Miami beat North Carolina to win the championship in 2013.

A number of future NBA stars have been named Most Valuable Player of the ACC basketball tournament. James Worthy, Mark Price, Christian Laettner, Tim Duncan, Elton Brand, Shane Battier and Carlos Boozer are just a few of the future NBA stars. Former Duke guard J.J. Redick is among the players who have won the MVP award twice.

Women’s ACC Basketball Tournament

The women’s version of the ACC tournament bracket has been around since 1978. The Maryland Terrapins won the inaugural tournament and have collected a league-high 10 ACC basketball championships overall. North Carolina is right behind with nine titles, while Duke has captured eight.
